The crash occurred at Bobi Trading Centre, about 20 kilometres from Gulu City, on the night of Tuesday, July 7, leaving several passengers dead and several others injured.

Ugandan police identified the trailer as a Mercedes-Benz Actros bearing Kenyan number plates and was being driven by a Kenyan national when it collided with an Isuzu passenger bus.

According to Uganda Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, preliminary investigations indicated that the bus driver was speeding when he attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the highway at Bobi Trading Centre.

Kananura said the bus driver lost control of the vehicle before veering into the opposite lan e, where it crashed head-on with the oncoming Kenyan trailer.

"The crash claimed the lives of 14 people, while 28 others sustained injuries," Kananura said, adding that the trailer driver was among those who died in the collision.

However, local witnesses reported that at least 40 people were injured in the crash, with the victims rushed to nearby hospitals as emergency teams worked through the night to rescue survivors and clear the wreckage.

Witnesses said the passenger bus was travelling from Kampala to Gulu, while the Kenyan trailer was reportedly transporting cargo from South Sudan when the collision occurred at around 9:30 pm.

Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, although excessive speed is the leading line of inquiry.
