Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has dismissed the United Opposition's alternative 'People's Budget', accusing the leaders of relying on government data to produce their own budget analysis.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking outside Parliament on Thursday, June 11, moments after presenting the Ksh4.82 trillion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, Mbadi challenged opposition leaders to develop their own economic projections instead of relying on government figures.

"I am now leaving it to Kenyans to hold leaders who just make sweeping statements accountable and who just sometimes pick up my figures, remove a few data from my figures, take my Finance Bill and claim to be providing an alternative budget," Mbadi said.

He further challenged the opposition leaders to conduct their own independent budget simulations and financial modelling to support any credible alternative budget.

📌 What You Need to Know

"If you want an alternative budget, have your people do a simulation. You will not be able to manage the country if God forbid, you become president with my data, because I will not be there to supply the data for you," he added.

The CS further described the opposition's budget proposals as 'child's play', urging the leaders to focus on critiquing government spending plans and offering practical alternatives.

"In fact, in my language, I can say that the opposition is preparing a child's play budget. They should stop those child-play budgets. Let them critique our budget and tell us where it is not making sense," Mbadi stated.

His remarks came a day after the opposition unveiled what it termed the 'People's Budget', which it said was designed to address challenges in education, health and unemployment.

In a joint statement read by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the coalition accused President William Ruto's administration of forcing a reckless, debt-ridden, anti-poor budget on Kenyans.

The opposition's proposals include increased funding for education and healthcare, restoration of programmes such as Linda Mama and Edu Afya , and the establishment of a Ksh80 billion youth employment initiative.
