Nairobi city, along with five other cities and towns across the country, will have CCTV surveillance cameras under the government's new security plan, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking during a church service in Nairobi on Sunday, June 14, Murkomen said the government is planning to roll out the CCTV coverage across Nairobi as part of a broader government strategy to modernise security operations and combat crime through technology.

The project, the CS said, will also be implemented in Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kisumu and Eldoret as the government seeks to leverage technology to improve public safety and strengthen law enforcement.

"We are in the process of revamping our security sector by infusing matters of technology," Murkomen announced.

📌 What You Need to Know

According to the CS, the government was in the final stages of procuring a new surveillance system that would see Nairobi become one of six pilot cities under the initiative.

"One of the things we are doing now is to procure, we are in the tail end of a procurement process to make sure that Nairobi will have CCTV coverage all over the city," he added.

Under the plan, the surveillance network would be linked to command centres that will enable security agencies to monitor activities in rela time and respond more effectively to incidents.

"That technology will ensure that there is bigger coverage o f CCTV with command centres , and it will make sure that we monitor every action that happens in those cities," he added.

Murkomen cited the growing challenge of petty crime in Nairobi, including pickpocketing, theft and the emergence of juvenile gangs, particularly within the Central Business District (CBD), as some of the reasons behind the move.

"We know that Nairobi in the recent past has faced petty thieves, pickpockets and some juvenile gangs even within the CBD. This revamping of the security sector will help us monitor and capture those people and make sure that we take them to account," he said.
