The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has unveiled a multi-billion-shilling Nairobi smart traffic project aimed at reducing persistent traffic congestion that has affected the city for years.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

This is after the government secured a Ksh10 billion loan from South Korea's Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) to implement the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

"The Kenyan government has secured a USD 83.8 million loan from EDCF to finance the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and Junctions Improvement Project Phase II," KURA stated.

The project is part of the government's efforts to modernise Nairobi's transport network and will focus on upgrading and improving 60 key road junctions across the city to ease congestion.

📌 What You Need to Know

Among other planned upgrades are the installation of 60 traffic signal systems, 60 CCTV cameras, 13 Vehicle Detector Systems (VDS), two Variable Message Signs (VMS), and 60 Vehicle Enforcement Systems (VES).

In a procurement notice dated Tuesday, June 16, KURA disclosed that the project will also include the construction of a new bridge and the extension of two existing bridges.

The Authority indicated that the works will be undertaken under a design-and-build contract and are expected to be completed within 30 months from the commencement date.

Beyond construction, the contractor will be required to provide operational support and maintenance services for four years after completion to ensure the infrastructure remains functional and sustainable.

KURA stated that only companies eligible under the EDCF loan guidelines and registered in South Korea will be allowed to participate in the bidding process.

Interested bidders have until August 4, 2026, at 11am to submit their bids, which require a bid security of Ksh129 million.
