🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The victims had reportedly been contracted to drain sewage from the school’s septic system when the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, May 28.
Preliminary reports indicate that the workers allegedly lost consciousness due to limited oxygen inside the confined septic tank before passing and consequently drowning.
Emergency response teams from the Makueni County disaster management unit, working alongside officials from the Kenya Red Cross, were dispatched to the scene to conduct a recovery operation.
📌 What You Need to Know
The bodies of all three victims were later retrieved from the tank after hours of rescue efforts before being taken to the nearest hospital for preservation.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident amid growing concerns over safety standards and compliance in such hazardous confined work environments.
The officers are expected to establish whether the workers had protective gear and whether proper safety procedures were followed before they entered the septic tank.
The incident comes just hours after another tragedy struck the country in Nakuru County, where 16 students from Utumishi Girls High School died following a dormitory fire.
Addressing the press moments after the incident, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed that the fire incident left 79 other learners nursing injuries.
Utumishi Girls High School had a total population of 815 students, with 808 learners present in the school at the time the deadly dormitory fire broke out on Thursday morning.
