Tension gripped Ol Kalou on Wednesday night after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen traded accusations following reports of chaos and gunshots near a hotel in the region during a meeting by the Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The incident occurred ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16, with the DCP party claiming its campaign strategists had been trapped inside the hotel as unrest unfolded outside.

In a statement, Gachagua accused security officers and what he described as state-sponsored groups of targeting his supporters, alleging that several campaigners had been assaulted and arrested.

"They arrived three hours ago and started abductions and indiscriminate beatings of DCP campaigners. Our teams are held up at the hotel under brutal police and State-sponsored militia. Goons are currently breaking into the hotel," Gachagua claimed.

He further alleged that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had dispatched what he referred to as a ‘Nairobi Sierra killer squad’ to disrupt his party's activities.

In a rejoinder, Murkomen swiftly responded, dismissing Gachagua's allegations and warning against any attempts to incite violence during the by-election campaigns.

"Mr Rigathi Gachagua, we know your gimmicks and juvenile attempts at reverse psychology. Try violence in Ol Kalou, and you will see. To anyone being recruited to violence by Mr Gachagua, keep off because the consequences will be dire," Murkomen warned.

The exchange came as reports emerged of gunshots being heard near the hotel, although the circumstances surrounding the incident had not been independently verified by the time of publication.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi also disputed Gachagua's account, claiming he had left the hotel shortly before the confrontation and accusing individuals linked to the former DP's camp of attacking women leaders.

According to Wamumbi, Gachagua's personal assistant and other associates led a group that allegedly assaulted women Members of the County Assembly and a female East African Legislative Assembly legislator.
