Motorists could be spared from tighter speed restrictions on highways after Members of Parliament rejected a proposal by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to impose speed limits.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to the MPs, the move could worsen traffic congestion on major highways, therefore causing unnecessary delays.
The concern was raised on Tuesday, August 11, when NTSA officials met with the National Assembly Departmental committee on Transport and Infrastructure to discuss operations and road safety measures.
During the meeting, the lawmakers questioned the proposed introduction of speed limits on highways, with MPs expressing concern that the restrictions could slow traffic and worsen congestion on major roads.
📌 What You Need to Know
Instead, NTSA was urged to focus on measures to improve road safety without unnecessarily disrupting motorist movement.
"The Committee, however, discouraged NTSA from imposing speed limits on highways, saying the move could worsen traffic congestion," the committee said in a statement after the meeting.
NTSA a lready enforces active speed limits on major Kenyan highways through an automated traffic enforcement system.
This system uses smart surveillance cameras to monitor traffic and send instant digital speeding fines via SMS.
However, motorists have consistently ignored the speed limits, with most saying they cannot spot the surveillance cameras.
Kenyan highways like Thika Road and Mombasa Road enforce strict limits of 50 kilometres per hou r in urban areas, 80 km/h on bypasses, and up to 110 km/h on open highway stretches.
