🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In an update posted shortly before midnight, Kenya Red Cross said that the vehicle was travelling from Ivingoni Ward to Kyathi when it veered off the road and overturned several times.

Reports indicated that the crash occurred along the Emali-Ukia road at Inyoni village in Ikangavya sub-location, where the matatu reportedly lost its brakes while descending a steep section of the road before leaving the road and crashing.

“A matatu carrying an estimated 50 passengers from Ivingoni Ward to Kyathi lost control, veered off the road, and rolled several times at Kalembwani, Makueni County,” the organisation wrote.

📌 What You Need to Know

Kenya Red Cross confirmed that a multi-agency response involving its team, Makueni County disaster management officials, and police was deployed to the scene, though the organisation did not immediately provide a casualty count as rescue and scene-clearance operations continued.

Some injured passengers were evacuated to Makueni County Referral Hospital, while others were taken to Matiliku Sub-County Hospital.

A video from the scene seen by Kenyans.co.ke shows the 45-seater completely destroyed, with extensive damage visible across the wreckage.

The passengers were reportedly family members and friends travelling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East to Maumba in Ikangavya for a dowry ceremony.

Another major crash involving a matatu and a lorry was reported on Friday evening on Gataka Road, near the Cooperative University bridge.

The collision was reported to have resulted in fatalities, although authorities have yet to confirm the number of people who lost their lives or provide an update on the condition of others involved.
