Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Busia Governor Paul Otuoma have been summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over remarks they allegedly made at separate public events, and both leaders have been warned that they risk arrest if they fail to appear before the commission.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In separate summons dated August 18, NCIC directed Gachagua to appear before the commission in Nairobi's Upper Hill area on Thursday, August 27, at 2pm.

“Take notice that failure to appear in person at the aforementioned place, date, and time, will lead to warrants of arrest being issued for your arrest and production before the Commission and/or the institution of criminal and/or contempt proceedings against you,” the commission warned.

Otuoma was similarly summoned to appear before NCIC at the same offices on Friday, August 21, at 10am to assist with ongoing investigations into remarks he allegedly made during a public rally at Bulanda Junction in Busia County on June 27.

📌 What You Need to Know

The commission said it was investigating remarks made by Otuoma during the rally, with the summons warning that failure to appear would result in warrants of arrest being issued and could lead to criminal or contempt proceedings.

For Gachagua, NCIC cited several incidents in which the DCP leader allegedly made remarks touching on communities and political leaders during public gatherings.

The commission specifically cited remarks he allegedly made in Luanda, Vihiga County, on June 12, as well as statements made at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County on February 23 targeting Nyaribari Chache MP Zagheer Jhanda.

NCIC also cited remarks attributed to Gachagua during his tour of Meru between July 25 and July 28, including his explanation of his earlier reference to “killing the snake and its eggs” as a political call to remove President William Ruto and his supporters through the ballot.

The former DP is also accused of making further remarks in Meru concerning the treatment of leaders from the Mount Kenya region and urging residents to take action against leaders he described as having betrayed the community.

The summons come a day after NCIC also summoned Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma over remarks he allegedly made ahead of the Linda Mwanachi rally in Homa Bay on August 16.
