🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a notice to its workers on Monday, August 17, the company said it has submitted all documents requested by the Ministry of Mining and is now awaiting further direction.

"Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited (TCML) confirms it has submitted all information, reports and documentation requested by the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs in connection with the suspension of its mining operations," the company said.

"TCML has responded comprehensively to the Ministry's concerns and demonstrated compliance with applicable regulatory requirements," it added.

However, it confirmed that its mining operations remain suspended nearly three weeks after the government directive took effect on July 28, 2026.

Stating that, "Mining operations have remain suspended since July 28 2026 in observance of the Government directive, pending the Ministry's review and further direction".

Tata Chemicals said it was now awaiting the Ministry's review of its submissions and a clear pathway to resume operations.

However, it raised concerns about the prolonged shutdown, noting that it was creating uncertainty for its employees, contractors, suppliers, transporters, and locals who depend on its operations.

Approximately 500 employees and their families are directly linked to the company's activities, while Tata Chemicals said about 30,000 people in the Magadi community benefit from its support programmes.

The shutdown followed a directive by Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho , who ordered the immediate suspension of Tata Chemicals Magadi's mining operations over alleged compliance gaps.
