President William Ruto has, for the first time, detailed his conversation with his predecessor, fourth president Uhuru Kenyatta, when he visited him at his Ichaweri home in 2024, amid the Gen Z uprising.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a recent interview, Ruto detailed how he went to Uhuru's farm to seek his support on how to run the country, but the former president allegedly turned him down.

According to the president, he reached out to Uhuru because he believed former leaders had a role to play in helping shape the country’s future and preparing the next generation of leaders.

"I went out of my way and looked for him first in Ichaweri and his office here in Nairobi and asked him, as a former Head of State, the only one living, he should help us to forge a new vision for the country, but he was reluctant and said he wasn't sure he wanted to do that," Ruto stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

The Head of State said Uhuru's decision was ultimately his own, saying the former president chose to remain involved in opposition politics instead.

“Those are choices that people make. Of course, he chose to do what he is doing, organising the opposition and sponsoring them,” he added.

Ruto's remarks have now shed a new light on his efforts to engage the former president after he left office, as political differences between the two continue to play out loud ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The president accused his former boss of sponsoring the opposition in efforts to destabilise his government, stating that Uhuru had an option to become a statesm an and help unify the country, but instead, he chose to oppose him.

"My predecessor had an option to become a statesman, but he chose to become an opposition leader. He is the chairperson of the Azimio Coalition and he is busy organising the opposition against me," the president noted.

Amid the attacks, Uhuru has, however, dismissed the claims that he is sponsoring the opposition, noting that he has no interest in any elective politics .
