The announcement was made on Thursday, May 28, as Amnesty International marked its 65th anniversary globally.
“On Amnesty International’s 65th Anniversary, Amnesty Kenya is proud to announce George Morara as our new Executive Director, effective 2 June 2026,” the organisation stated.
According to a statement signed by Section Chairperson Stellah Wairimu Bosire, Morara brings 30 years of experience in governance, public accountability and human rights advocacy.

The organisation also cited his previous role as Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) among the positions that shaped his leadership record in the human rights sector.
“George Morara brings a distinguished record of three decades of leadership in governance, public accountability, and human rights advocacy. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation as a principled and strategic leader, committed to advancing constitutionalism, transparency, and civic engagement,” the statement read.
Morara succeeds Irũngũ Houghton, who has served as Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya for the past eight years.
Amnesty Kenya credited Houghton with overseeing the transition of the organisation from a national office of the International Secretariat to a membership-driven organisation governed by a national board of Kenyans.
As Morara prepares to take office, Amnesty Kenya expressed confidence that his experience would guide the organisation into its next phase.
According to the organisation, Morara will take the helm at a critical moment for human rights advocacy in Kenya and the wider East African region.
