Another church break-in in Kirinyaga has raised concern over the security of worship centres after thieves stole equipment worth about Ksh500,000, adding to a series of similar incidents reported in the county in recent days.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Thieves broke into PCEA Karii Church in Kangai Ward, Mwea Constituency, on Friday night and made away with electronic equipment valued at approximately Ksh500,000.
The stolen items included a mixer, two keyboards and their adaptors, as well as microphone batteries. The thieves also broke into the church’s tithe box but reportedly found no money inside.
The break-in was discovered after church pianist Misheck Mwangi was called to the church and found that the premises had been broken into, according to church registrar Joseph Gichira.
📌 What You Need to Know
Gichira said the theft was particularly painful because the church had recently acquired some of the equipment through fundraising by the youth. He said the church currently does not have a security guard to watch over the premises at night.
“We have no watchman. Sadly, they are carrying even old items, yet we had just bought new ones in May after fundraising by the youth,” Gichira said.
The stolen equipment is expected to affect the church’s ability to conduct services normally, with the latest incident adding to concerns over the safety of worship centres that hold valuable sound and electronic equipment.
The PCEA Karii incident comes a week after ACK Gatuto Church in Kanyeki-ini Ward , Kirinyaga Central, was also broken into, with thieves making away with sound equipment worth more than Ksh500,000. The theft disrupted Sunday worship after congregants found the church without its sound system.
Another attempted break-in was also reported at Nyaga Catholic Church, although the suspects reportedly failed to gain entry, and at AIPCA St Phillips Giacai Church, thieves also broke into the premises and ransacked the altar.
The series of incidents has brought renewed attention to the security of churches across Kirinyaga, with the affected worship centres reportedly facing similar challenges in protecting their premises at night.
