🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

This follows a night of unrest on May 25 that led to the burning of two dormitories and widespread destruction of property.

Images of the aftermath obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show the school’s entrance before moving into one of the affected dormitories, where the interior was severely scorched, with charred beds and debris scattered across the floor.

Outside the dormitory, students’ metal trunks and other personal belongings are piled in an open area.

📌 What You Need to Know

Reports reaching our desks show that police intervened, and peace has since been restored as investigations go on.

As of the time of publication, the cause of the unrest had not yet been established.

The incident adds to the already long list of school fire incidents and unrest that secondary schools have been subjected to since the opening of the second term.

On March 25, 12 boys from Maranda High School were arrested after CCTV footage evidence implicated them as being responsible for the torching of a newly constructed dormitory.

The students were arrested while attempting to flee the scene shortly after the fire, before being handed over to school administration and later taken into police custody at Bondo Police Station.

In Makueni County, five schools have witnessed dormitory fires, with some forced to close indefinitely, and parents forced to bear the brunt of renovations.
