A joint postmortem on the Grade 9 student who died at Lakewood Private School in Utawala has established that he succumbed to severe blunt force trauma consistent with a fall from height.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The examination was carried out at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Monday, June 29, and led by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor as part of ongoing investigations into 14-year-old Randy Mathenge’s death.
Speaking after the examination, family representative Zuriel said the team established that the learner sustained severe head injuries as well as injuries to the back and chest caused by blunt-force trauma, pointing to a fall from a height.
“Following our investigations, we have found that the late student suffered severe head injury and also back and chest injuries due to what we can call blunt force trauma, and it is consistent with a fall from a height,” he stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
The exercise was conducted by a team of government and KNH pathologists, homicide detectives and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who all reached a common finding on the nature of the injuries.
KNH pathologist Bernard Midia said investigators will now proceed to examine the scene where the incident occurred and analyse personal effects together with other samples collected from the body.
Midia said the additional investigations are intended to help investigators reconstruct the events leading to the death before the case can be concluded.
“The pathology forms part of the ongoing investigations. We will also visit the scene of the crime and investigate personal effects and other samples that have been taken from the body so that we can build the story and come to a conclusion to wrap up this case,” he explained.
The findings come a week after Mathenge’s family publicly rejected the school’s account of the circumstances around the death that occurred on June 19.
According to the family, school administrators had said that he allegedly jumped from the third floor of a building shortly after arriving at school.
