A postmortem has confirmed that 44-year-old Maureen Nduku died from complications arising from a gunshot wound sustained in Gikomba, Nairobi.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking after the autopsy was conducted on Tuesday, August 11, a relative of the deceased, Johnson Muema, explained that a doctor who examined the results established that the bullet entered Nduku’s intestines and caused extensive internal damage.
The injury allowed harmful bacteria to enter her bloodstream, resulting in a severe infection that spread through her body.
“The doctor has given us a report confirming that Maureen was indeed shot. He found that what led to her death was an infection caused after the bullet got into her intestines and released harmful bacteria into her bloodstream. The doctor said such a widespread infection is often difficult to stop,” he said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The infection subsequently affected several organs, including her brain, before she died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Nduku was shot on Monday, August 3, after police opened fire during a response to a reported robbery and disturbance in the Gikomba area.
The family maintains that officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station were involved in the incident and wants the circumstances surrounding the shooting fully investigated.
Relatives are now calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct an independent and expedited investigation into the incident after noting that a team under the authority was present at the autopsy.
They are also demanding that officers implicated in the shooting be arrested and removed from their duties pending appropriate action.
Additionally, the family has renewed its demand that the whereabouts of the bullet be established, saying the postmortem findings have strengthened their call for accountability.
