A court in Kiambu has halted for a second time the Affordable Housing Project in Githunguri on a 58-acre plot of land that is the subject of a dispute.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
This followed elders in Githunguri filing a case in court, stating that a particular piece of land was intended for cultural initiatives and community activities.
The decision also came in an August 24 mention, which stated that about 2,180 affordable housing units initially to be constructed on a piece of land would be halted.
According to reports, the court not only ordered the halt of construction but also ordered t he contractor to vacate the site, remove machinery, and demolish the erected perimeter wall pending a full hearing.
📌 What You Need to Know
The piece of land was initially ordered by the community elders not only to preserve it but also to preserve the history of the Mau Mau.
They have stated that the money intended for the project, usually between Ksh5.5 billion and Ksh6.5 billion for 2,000 units, should instead be channelled towards building facilities such as libraries, hospitals, and classrooms for the community.
They have, however, restricted the government from interfering in their plans, such as building the altar, and have insisted that that particular item shall be done by themselves.
"The money that was intended for the project in this piece of land, the state can decide to channel the funds towards building amenities such as hospitals and libraries," stated one community elder.
Adding, "Everything else, such as building an altar for the sanctuary will be done by ourselves."
This adds to the growing list of ambitious projects facing legal battles, including the Southlands Affordable Housing Project in Lang'ata, Nairobi, which was halted by a three-judge bench of the Environment and Land Court on May 29, 2026.
