Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has challenged changes to the Jubilee Party leadership structure, including the appointment of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as the party’s Deputy Party Leader ahead of the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to a statement released on May 28, Ngunjiri confirmed that he had filed a dispute before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) against the Jubilee Party and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
The dispute questions the legality and constitutionality of changes made within the party, with Ngunjiri arguing that members have not been provided with documents showing who approved the decisions.
At the same time, the former lawmaker is also questioning the party organs that sanctioned the decisions.
📌 What You Need to Know
At the centre of the dispute is the registration of Matiang’i as Jubilee’s Deputy Party Leader and presumed 2027 presidential flagbearer, which Ngunjiri claims was done without a constitutionally mandated National Delegates Conference (NDC).
However, Ngunjiri clarified that the case is not aimed at blocking Matiang’i from seeking the presidency or serving within the Jubilee Party.
“This case is not about whether Dr Fred Matiang’i should or should not seek the Presidency. Every qualified Jubilee member has a right to seek elective office,” he stated.
According to him, the matter is instead focused on whether the party followed its constitution and internal procedures.
Ngunjiri further questioned Jubilee’s internal governance and decision-making processes , arguing that party members deserve transparency and accountability from officials.
The former MP also raised concerns over Jubilee’s decision not to field a candidate in the Mbeere North by-election, saying the party publicly cited a United Opposition arrangement.
