Bolt has added tuk-tuks to its offerings in the coastal city of Mombasa, as the company moves to improve its penetration in the region.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Tuk-tuks, a popular form of transport on the Coast, come with the option of two passengers and competitive fares under the Bolt app.

According to Bolt, the addition aims to make it easier for passengers to access one of Mombasa's most recognisable modes of transport through the same platform they already use to book motorcycles and cars.

Mombasa County revenue records indicate that about 4,000 tuk-tuks operate in the city, pointing to the popularity of the three-wheeled vehicles.

📌 What You Need to Know

Shorter distances, busy neighbourhoods and the city's distinctive layout have made tuk-tuks a practical option for everyday travel, sitting comfortably alongside motorcycles and cars.

Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa, said the local transport culture has played an important role in shaping mobility options on the platform.

"Every city has its own transport culture, and Mombasa's is one of the most distinctive in Kenya. Our role is simply to make that experience more accessible and convenient for the people who use it every day," Kanyankole stated.

According to Bolt, the growing use of digital platforms is helping make these familiar transport options easier to access, allowing passengers to compare transport choices based on convenience, distance, and budget through a single app.

For instance, a ride from Mwembe Tayari Road to Mama Ngina Waterfront will cost about Ksh190, although fares are subject to market conditions.

A similar trip on a normal boda boda costs about Ksh160 for one passenger, providing commuters with another option depending on their budget and preference.
