About 300 residents of Mukuru are set to benefit from a fresh Affordable Housing allocation plan after missing out on units despite paying the required deposit.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The clarification was issued by the Affordable Housing Board (AHB) Chief Executive Officer Joe Mutugu during a meeting with Mukuru residents amid uproar over the missing housing units.
According to Mutungu, residents missed the houses due to high demand, promising that applicants who can be verified as genuine residents of Mukuru and who had previously applied for houses but were unsuccessful due to high demand.
Speaking on Wednesday, September 2, the Boma Yangu boss said the move was part of efforts to address concerns that have emerged following the allocation of housing units in the settlement.
📌 What You Need to Know
"There are others who are genuine residents of Mukuru. They applied but because of high demand they were not successful. I am told they are about 300. All of them, we will make sure they get their houses," Mutugu said.
He said those who had applied and could be confirmed as genuine Mukuru residents would be given priority in the fresh allocation process.
The announcement comes amid growing anger among some Mukuru residents who say they were allocated houses or paid deposits only to receive later messages indicating that the units were sold out.
The residents have been demanding answers over the allocation process and how applicants who had already expressed interest in the units were locked out.
Mutugu acknowledged the high demand for social housing in Mukuru, saying the number of applicants had exceeded the available units.
The Board has also identified 164 residents who were enumerated before the construction of the Mukuru housing project and had been expected to benefit from the new development.
