The government has begun the verification of claims surrounding the allocation of the Affordable Housing Units in Mukuru, Nairobi, after residents raised concerns over the distribution of the units.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The State Department of Housing and Urban Development said it is currently investigating the allegations, with affected applicants expected to be identified and the matter addressed accordingly.

"Kindly note that the allegations are currently being verified, and any applicants affected by the allocation concerns will be identified and the matter addressed accordingly," the State Department said.

The clarification followed widespread protests on Friday after Mukuru residents took to the streets, complaining that they had missed units in the Boma Yangu Programme despite paying the required deposit.

📌 What You Need to Know

Some residents questioned how units were allocated after they had made payments , with concerns also being raised over whether the process was fair and transparent.

"I paid Ksh80,000 for a bedsitter, but I have not gotten anything. It's only recently that I received a message saying the units were sold out," one resident claimed.

"We only received that message, without any information on who bought them or what we were supposed to do. We were not even given notice," another one added.

Following the heightened concerns over the allegations, the Ministry of Lands and Housing has now taken it upon itself to verify the claims and address the matter accordingly.

Earlier, there were issues regarding the allocation of units in the Mukuru units, with residents claiming that they were not being issued the units as expected.

However, the State Department maintained that the units were being issued per block so as to ensure order and proper coordination.
