The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is proposing permit processing fees of Ksh15,000 for commercial-use and Ksh5,000 for non-commercial or personal-use ICT equipment imported through the National Electronic Single Window System (NESWS).
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, September 9, the authority said it had reviewed submissions received during the public participation exercise on the proposed charges and would present its revised position to stakeholders for validation before the proposal moves to the next stage.
The forum is scheduled for September 23 and will allow stakeholders to review and validate the authority’s revised position.
“In a bid to promote a sustainable and efficient permit clearance process on the National Electronic Single Window System (NESWS), the Authority developed a consultation paper titled the proposed permit fees, which was subjected to the public and stakeholders for their representations,” the CA stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
“The Authority has since reviewed the representations received and therefore wishes to conduct a stakeholder validation exercise on September 23, 2026,” it added.
The Authority has proposed a Ksh15,000 fee for commercial-use permits and Ksh5,000 for non-commercial or personal-use permits.
The charges would apply specifically to permit processing through NESWS, an electronic platform hosted by KenTrade to facilitate clearance and trade processes involving various government agencies.
The move comes after a consultation in which industry players and other stakeholders raised concerns over the additional cost of importing ICT equipment.
However, CA has maintained that the fees are intended to meet the costs related to maintaining efficient operations and allocating dedicated resources to process permits within the stringent timelines applicable to the system.
Under the proposed framework, the fee would be charged for each permit submitted through NESWS rather than for every individual unit of equipment.
