A CAF technical delegation is currently in the country assessing Kenya's preparedness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced on Thursday, August 27, when he welcomed the federation's delegation. The delegation will inspect facilities in Nairobi before proceeding to Eldoret to assess Kipchoge Keino Stadium as a potential alternative competition venue.
According to Mvurya, the CAF team will also assess possible training grounds, accommodation facilities, medical services, and other critical infrastructure in Eldoret.
📌 What You Need to Know
"During the inspection, the CAF delegation will assess key competition venues, training facilities and supporting infrastructure in Nairobi, before proceeding to Eldoret to assess the Kipchoge Keino Stadium as a potential alternative competition venue, alongside possible training grounds, accommodation facilities, medical facilities and other critical tournament infrastructure," Mvurya said.
The inclusion of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in the latest inspection gives Eldoret a fresh opportunity to host competitive AFCON fixtures, having previously been considered mainly as an alternative venue and training facility.
If approved by CAF, Kipchoge Stadium could be added to the Talanta International Stadium and the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, which have already been cleared to host the matches.
The government is intensifying upgrade works at Kasarani, with the construction of the Raila Odinga stadium also reported to be at 92 per cent.
At the same time, works are being accelerated at the Kipchoge Stadium, which is also set to host the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.
The 2027 AFCON games are scheduled from June 19 to July 17, 2027, with the three countries currently working towards operationalising a joint visa framewor k to ease movement across their borders during the tournament.
