The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has opened up Kenya's government securities market to international investors, partnering with Clearstream to create a direct link to the local bond market.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
This means foreign institutional investors can now access Kenyan Treasury bills, government bonds, and infrastructure bonds more easily than ever before.
From a notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke , the CBK-Clearstream link connects global investors to Kenya's Government Central Securities Depository, known as DhowCSD , through a specialised omnibus account structure.
“ The Central Bank of Kenya welcomes the establishment of the Clearstream-Kenya Link which is expected to provide efficient access by international investors to Kenyan Government securities, supported by the Government Central Securities Depository (DhowCSD),” stated CBK.
📌 What You Need to Know
Clearstream , the post-trade business arm of Deutsche Börse Group, is one of the world's most trusted financial infrastructure providers, giving this deal serious global weight.
According to CBK, Kenya now joins an elite group of markets in Clearstream's global network, becoming only the second African country after South Africa to secure such a link.
This milestone makes Kenya the 60th domestic market connected within Clearstream's worldwide network, a recognition of the country's growing financial credibility on the global stage.
For ordinary Kenyans, the immediate benefit is a deeper, more liquid bond market that can attract more funding for government projects, including roads, hospitals, and schools.
Additionally, wider international investor base also means the government has more options when borrowing money , which can reduce reliance on expensive domestic debt and ease pressure on interest rates.
The CBK says the link builds on ongoing efforts to modernise DhowCSD, which is already transforming how Kenya's financial markets operate through improved digital access and efficiency.
