Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir has announced new restrictions on construction activities as the county prepares for heavy rainfall and a heightened risk of flooding.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The Governor said mixing sand, ballast and cement at construction sites will be prohibited starting Monday, September 14, after a 48-hour transition period.
Nassir directed developers who already have approvals to use up their materials within the two-day window or store them until further notice.
“Mixing concrete, ballast, sand, and cement on-site is no longer acceptable in Mombasa. Those with existing approvals have the next 48 hours to use up their cement and sand, because from Monday, no one will be allowed to mix these materials on-site,” he stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
Nassir explained that the mixed construction materials left along roadsides obstruct drainage and worsen flooding when heavy rains begin.
“When sand and ballast are left along roadsides as the rains come, our roads and walkways end up flooding, creating problems for neighbouring residents as well,” he noted.
The Governor also warned that quarrying activities could soon be suspended if rainfall intensifies.
In addition, the State Department for Transport is expected to engage stakeholders over possible restrictions on heavy commercial vehicles during specified periods.
The measures come as parts of Mombasa have already experienced flooding , with Ziwalang’ombe, Inuka, Railway and Ziwani among the affected areas.
Floodwater has reportedly disrupted access to Ziwalang’ombe Dispensary, leaving some patients unable to reach the facility and health workers struggling to report for duty.
