Irungu Nyakera, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has officially abandoned his Nairobi gubernatorial ambitions for a fresh political direction.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Through a formal statement seen by  Kenyans.co.ke on August 18, the former Principal Secretary has instead set his sights on the Makadara Constituency parliamentary seat in Nairobi County, a move that seems to have caught many by surprise.

In his announcement, he described consultations with his political mentors, particularly the DCP Party's leader Gachagua, as well as pressure from residents to represent them directly.

“After consultations with my political mentors, and more importantly, after listening to the people of Makadara who have asked me to come home and offer myself as their Member of Parliament, I have made the decision to shift my political focus from the Nairobi gubernatorial race to Makadara Constituency,” Nyakera stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

He explained that the people of Makadara had personally appealed to him to come home and serve as their Member of Parliament in 2027.

That appeal, he says, weighed heavily on his decision to step back from the crowded and expensive Nairobi Governor race entirely.

Before making the switch public, Nyakera travelled to Wamunyoro alongside a delegation from Makadara to meet Gachagua at his rural home in Wamunyoro.

During the visit, he expressed gratitude for what he called Gachagua's blessings as he now pursues the Makadara MP seat under the DCP party.

“Today, together with a delegation from Makadara, I visited H.E. Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home. I thank him for being my political mentor, for his guidance and counsel, and for warmly receiving us,” Nyakera stated.

Adding, “I am especially grateful for his blessings as I embark on this new journey to become the next Member of Parliament for the Makadara Constituency under the DCP Party.”
