The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced a routine upgrade of its ICT systems that will temporarily disrupt several online voter services, including voter search, transfers and change of voter particulars.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 7, the commission said the upgrade is aimed at improving the reliability, security and overall performance of its digital services.
According to the electoral agency, the temporary disruption affects the public voter search portal available through verify.iebc.or.ke, as well as services relating to voter transfers and updates of voter details.
However, the commission assured Kenyans that physical voter registration services remain unaffected and will continue as scheduled at its 290 constituency offices, Huduma Centres and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
📌 What You Need to Know
"The Commission wishes to inform stakeholders and members of the public that we are currently undertaking a routine upgrade of our ICT systems to enhance reliability, security and performance of our services," IEBC said in the notice.
The commission added that it would notify the public once the maintenance exercise is complete.
The announcement, however, sparked concern among some Kenyans on social media , with several questioning why the notice was issued after users had already begun experiencing difficulties accessing some of the affected services.
Some users argued that planned maintenance notices should ordinarily be communicated before system upgrades begin, with others calling for greater transparency whenever critical electoral systems undergo scheduled maintenance.
The development comes as the commission is undertaking the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise in five electoral areas ahead of upcoming by-elections .
The ongoing registration, which began on June 25 and runs until July 25, is being conducted in Mbeere North Constituency, Porro Ward, Endo Ward, Emurua Dikirr Constituency and Malava Constituency.
