Principal Secretary- State Department for Youth Affairs & Creative Economy Fikirini Jacobs' bodyguard, Cecil Ouma, has been released on a Ksh20,000 bond as the probe into the fatal shooting continues.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

This was confirmed by his lawyer, Danstan Omari, on July 8, who affirmed that the bodyguard was released on personal bond following investigations into the incident that found no evidence linking the bodyguard to the shooting on June 30.

"Today we came to court, and they say they have completed the investigation, and currently they have no evidence to charge him,” stated Omari.

“They were asking for him to be released on bail, the court has agreed; we have also agreed that he be released on a personal bond and let him go back to work.”

📌 What You Need to Know

Omari defended the bodyguard, arguing that the officer acted within the scope of his constitutional duty to protect the life of the PS during the fatal confrontation that claimed the life of a civilian.

He stated that in the events that led to the shooting, Cecil forcefully jumped into the PS’s car after the youth engagement he had in Nairobi, which forced the bodyguard to act within his jurisdiction to defend the CS.

According to Omari, the bodyguard asked the deceased to get out of the Principal Secretary's vehicle, but he allegedly refused. Omari further claimed that the PS even gave the man Ksh10,000 from his own pocket, but he remained unsatisfied, prompting the bodyguard to intervene in an effort to protect the PS.

He also reiterated that the videos that were circulating on social media showed the bodyguard in a compromising position outside the car of the PS while surrounded by a group of youth, prompting him to use his firearm to protect the PS.

“The deceased forcefully jumped into the PS’s car after the Nairobi event; the PS gave him his personal money, not government money, mark that,” stated Omari.

“He was not satisfied. My client was forced to cut out of his way and within the confines of his duty as an officer defending a government entity to defend the PS.” Notwithstanding, he also clarified that the PS is in contact with Cecil’s family and would personally cover the funeral expenses.
