Human rights activist Bob Njagi has been freed after the Kajiado Law Courts dismissed a treason case against him, ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a case.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The Principal Magistrate dropped the charges and closed the file on Thursday, June 2, ruling that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had not presented sufficient evidence to sustain the case.

In a post seen by this publication, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino confirmed the development, urging investigative agencies to ensure they have adequate evidence before charging individuals in court.

“Today at Kajiado Law Courts we represented activist Bob Njagi who was charged with treason. The court found that the case had no merit and dismissed it,” he wrote.

📌 What You Need to Know

Owino was part of Njagi’s legal team alongside Siaya County Governor James Orengo, Senator Dan Maanzo and advocate Erick Ngunjiri.

The ruling comes after the court had allowed police to detain Njagi at Isinya Police Station for over a week as detectives conducted investigations.

Njagi was arrested in Kajiado County on June 24 over allegations of incitement linked to the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations.

Police alleged that a video posted on social media showed him encouraging youth to participate in protests, arguing that the remarks could incite destruction of property in Kitengela.

His arrest came a day before nationwide protests that saw leaders, activists and citizens take to the streets to commemorate those who died during the 2024 and 2025 protests.

Njagi’s arrest sparked public uproar, with citizens scrutinising the government over the reported arrest of 355 people nationwide in connection with the demonstrations, as well as allegations of abductions.
