A fresh storm of wrangles is looming in the opposition after the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, admitted that he has doubts about the coalition's unity.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking to the Kenyan community in the United States on Sunday, September 27, Gachagua expressed reservations about the commitment of some of his fellow opposition leaders, challenging them to publicly pledge support for whoever is selected to fly the opposition's flag in the 2027 general election.
According to the former Deputy President, some opposition principals have been unreliable, raising doubts about whether the coalition's leaders will rally behind a single candidate.
Gachagua said he would support whoever is chosen to challenge President William Ruto if he is not selected as the opposition's candidate, challenging his fellow leaders to make a similar public commitment.
📌 What You Need to Know
"From where I sit, I don't want to talk about other people because they can disappoint you. I will support anyone who is chosen, if not me. And I challenge my brothers and sisters also to give a similar commitment publicly," Gachagua stated.
At the same time, the DCP leader challenged the other aspirants to direct their supporters to back the eventual candidate and stop issuing statements suggesting they would rather support President William Ruto if their preferred candidate is not selected.
"Some are a little bit slippery, and that is why I have a little doubt. I want them to tell their supporters to stop issuing some statements I hear in Kenya that if it is not so and so, then we'd better for Ruto, or so and so is the sixth, or Ruto remains the president," he added.
According to Gachagua, other opposition leaders should direct their supporters to issue threats compelling the coalition to settle on them, or else they would vote for Ruto.
The DCP leader said the comments cast doubt on the coalition's unity and should be addressed immediately.
He maintains that the Kenyan people have directed them to pick a single candidate to face Ruto, and it did not matter who the candidate is.
