Cracks are emerging in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over recent remarks by the party's Secretary General, Hassan Omar, regarding dead voters.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, September 24, UDA nominated Senator Karen Nyamu called on the party to drop Omar as its Secretary General over what he termed reckless demands.

According to Nyamu, Omar’s remarks risk causing confusion because some people may mistake his personal views for official UDA positions.

She noted that, as the ruling party, statements by its officials could also be interpreted as reflecting President William Ruto’s position.

📌 What You Need to Know

"When you are an SG of a ruling party, you should not be talking about what you think because you talk on behalf of the party and the president," Nyamu stated.

The senator maintained that Omar's recent remarks, which have caused public uproar, are his own thoughts and do not reflect the position of UDA in any way.

She further called on the party organisations to take firm action on the SG, including removing him from his position as the secretary general.

"I am not in any senior leadership position in the party, but I don't know what the party structures are waiting for. He is doing us a lot of damage. People are confused because he is the SG," she added.

On September 11, while addressing a political gathering in Mombasa, Omar said that fingerprints of people who died shortly before the election could be taken before burial and used with biometric voter registration kits to cast their votes for President William Ruto

“On election day, we have to fight for every vote. Even if someone has died, we should take their fingerprint before they are buried, use it in the BVR system and cast a vote even for someone who died that very day,” he said.
