The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for first-time university students and TVET trainees seeking government funding to September 21, giving eligible applicants more time to submit their applications.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a statement obtained by Kenyans.co.ke , Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to reopen the application period following concerns that some students had missed the original deadline.
“Recognising that some eligible students and trainees may not have met the initial deadline on account of various causes, the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board have been directed to extend the application window for all eligible applicants to 21st September, 2026,” he wrote.
The initial application window closed on August 31 after the government received 789,422 funding applications.
📌 What You Need to Know
Ogamba confirmed that Ksh22.12 billion had already been disbursed for first-semester and first-term funding to continuing university students and TVET trainees.
The extension comes as first-year students continue reporting to universities and TVET institutions amid uncertainty over the rollout of the proposed new higher education funding framework.
