In a statement issued on Friday, August 28, the directorate explained that the operation was carried out by officers attached to Mtito Andei Police Station following intelligence that led them to the suspected network.

“A counterfeit syndicate dealing in fake banknotes has been dismantled in Makueni County after officers from Mtito Andei Police Station executed a swift, intelligence-led crackdown, seizing counterfeit currency with a face value of KSh 4,378,000,” the statement read.

The first two suspects, a 57-year-old and a 59-year-old, were arrested in Kambu Township, where police recovered Ksh4 million in counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes during the operation.

Investigators subsequently extended the operation to Mtito Andei Township as they pursued further leads in the suspected syndicate.

Officers stopped a heavy-duty truck, which was travelling from Mombasa to Naivasha while carrying fertiliser.

A search of the vehicle uncovered another batch of counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes valued at Ksh378,000.

The truck’s occupants, a 52-year-old and a 42-year-old, were then arrested in connection with the suspected counterfeit currency.

DCI said the four suspects are being held by police ahead of an appearance in court as investigations into the suspected syndicate continue.

The seized currency and other exhibits have been placed at Mtito Andei Police Station as detectives pursue additional leads.
