Detectives from the Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit (IFIU) have arrested a suspect over nine allegedly fraudulent compensation claims linked to a road crash.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, the suspect is accused of coordinating the submission of the disputed claims.

Investigators said the claims were made against an insured vehicle and a third-party vehicle involved in a 2023 accident on Kangundo Road.

“Detectives drawn from the Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit (IFIU) have arrested a suspect in connection with nine (9) fraudulent compensation claims arising from a road traffic accident involving two motor vehicles along Kangundo Road on September 8, 2023,” the statement read.

📌 What You Need to Know

The case was referred to the fraud investigations unit after an insurer raised concerns about whether the compensation claims submitted by people said to have been injured in the incident were genuine.

Investigations reportedly found that supporting documents presented for the claims had been fraudulently obtained from Mama Lucy Hospital and Kayole Police Station.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) then reviewed the case file compiled by investigators, recommending that the suspect face charges of conspiracy and insurance fraud.

Detectives later arrested him in the Omega area of Kasarani and processed him ahead of his expected appearance at the Milimani Law Courts.

The arrest comes as authorities intensify efforts to identify individuals and networks accused of manipulating insurance compensation systems through fabricated accidents, documents and injury claims.

DCI warned that attempts to manipulate legitimate compensation processes can be detected, investigated and prosecuted.
