The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned traders and other Kenyans against dealing in uncustomed goods after detectives uncovered a suspected illegal sugar repackaging operation in Bungoma County.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The intelligence-led crackdown at Bukembe Shopping Centre in Bungoma South Sub-County resulted in the recovery of 200 bags of 50-kilogramme sugar, including sugar that had allegedly been repackaged in different sacks.

Detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU) and DCI Bungoma South launched the operation after receiving what the agency described as actionable intelligence on suspected dealings in uncustomed goods.

During the raid, detectives recovered 76 bags of 50-kilogramme sugar, nine bags of sugar that had already been repackaged and 10 empty 50-kilogramme sacks.

📌 What You Need to Know

A further search of a vehicle linked to the operation led to the recovery of 26 additional bags of sugar, which detectives believed were intended for transportation and distribution.

The detectives then proceeded to a godown located south of Bukembe Shopping Centre, where they recovered another 98 bags of 50-kilogramme sugar.

The raid also uncovered 1,700 empty 50-kilogramme sugar sacks, raising suspicions that the premises were being used to repackage sugar before distributing it to the market.

The DCI said the discovery had prompted further investigations to establish the source of the sugar and trace the networks involved in its supply and distribution.

The agency warned traders and other people involved in the sale of uncustomed goods that detectives would continue targeting businesses suspected of facilitating illicit trade.

The DCI maintained that the crackdown was part of its efforts to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses and dismantle criminal networks dealing in uncustomed and illicitly repackaged goods.
