The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is under pressure to act after motorists protested rising insecurity along major highways, following reports of attacks on the Kisumu-Busia road and Nairobi Expressway.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Motorists travelling between Kisumu and Busia have been urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly at night, following a reported attack near Maseno in which a driver was targeted on Friday morning.
According to the driver, the youths allegedly struck and shattered his windscreen while he was travelling from Kisumu towards Busia before pursuing him while armed with pangas and rungus.
“Those who are coming from Kisumu heading to Busia, be careful. There are some youths around the Maseno area. They have hit and broken my windscreen as I was heading home. They then began following me with pangas and rungus,” the driver said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The reported incident has heightened concerns among long-distance drivers who regularly use the busy Kisumu-Busia route, with motorists calling for intervention by the National Police Service (NPS).
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) has also raised the alarm, describing the highway as particularly dangerous at night.
In a social media post, the association urged motorists to avoid using the route after dark where possible and called on the police service and the DCI to increase security patrols along the highway.
"The Kisumu-Busia route is worse, especially at night. Drivers, if possible, avoid this route at night. NPS and the DCI should increase their patrols," the Association stated.
The security concerns have also spread to other major roads, with a separate robbery reported on the Nairobi Expressway just a day earlier.
A video circulating online shows a group of men approaching vehicles on the expressway, with the suspects seen stopping one vehicle and allegedly robbing its occupants before moving to another vehicle and carrying out a similar attack.
