Five women have been rescued from a house in Nairobi after detectives uncovered an alleged online sexual exploitation operation in which victims were reportedly lured with promises of lucrative job opportunities.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 21, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers from its Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) arrested three suspects after conducting an intelligence-led operation in the Mihang’o area of Embakasi East.
The directorate warned that criminal networks are increasingly using fake employment opportunities to target vulnerable job seekers.
“The DCI cautions job seekers to exercise vigilance when responding to employment offers, particularly those from unverified recruiters, as criminal networks continue to exploit vulnerable individuals through false promises of lucrative jobs,” the DCI stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
Preliminary findings indicate the victims had accepted what they believed were genuine job offers before allegedly being forced to produce sexual content for commercial purposes.
Investigators said the women were found confined in two bedrooms inside the premises during the raid.
Detectives recovered several items from the house that they believe were used to facilitate the suspected operation, with the exhibits documented for investigations.
The directorate arrested a 43-year-old woman believed to have operated the premises, her 24-year-old daughter, who is suspected of recruiting the victims, and her 30-year-old son-in-law, who allegedly maintained the computer systems used in the operation.
The suspects remain in police custody at Kasarani Police Station, pending processing and arraignment.
They are expected to face trafficking charges under Sections 3(1)(d) and 3(5) of the Counter-Trafficking in Persons Act, alongside other related offences.
