The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has formed a seven-member committee to vet politicians seeking to defect from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, among other parties, and join the party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
This was confirmed by Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu on Monday, August 17, during an interview on NTV .
According to Nyutu, who is part of the vetting team, the committee will scrutinise the intentions of politicians seeking to join DCP to establish whether they are genuinely committed to the party's cause.
"One thing that we will be advising anyone who appears before us is that they must make their intentions public. That they cannot simply come and maybe talk to some of us, talk to the party leader, you know, maybe in private. One of the requirements is that you must go public about your intention," Nyutu stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to the senator, defectors are required to make their intentions of defecting public before appearing before the panel for vetting.
Once that is done, Nyutu revealed that the committee will see people's reactions before doing the formal vetting.
"We also want to know, are you not joining us because you have realised that the ship on the other side is sinking? And you want to save your skin, at least politically. Because if that is the reason, if you're able to establish that that is the reason, then, of course, you'll not be a genuine member of this particular outfit that we have formed," he added.
Nyutu said the vetting process will also seek to establish whether prospective members are joining DCP because they genuinely believe in its political agenda or because they are seeking political survival as the fortunes of their current party decline .
Politicians who join DCP simply because they believe their political careers are threatened, he said, will not be regarded as genuine members of the party.
The committee, chaired by Nyandarua senator and DCP Secretary General Designate John Methu, includes Nyutu, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru.
