Kenya Railways is constructing a dedicated railway connection linking Nairobi Central Station to Talanta Sports City through Nyayo Stadium as the government upgrades transport infrastructure serving the new sports facility.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The railway connection is being developed to provide an alternative public transport option for sports fans, athletes and event personnel travelling to and from Talanta Stadium during major sporting and entertainment events.

The ongoing works include upgrading 13.3 kilometres of the existing railway track between Nairobi Central Station and Satellite, according to an update by Kenya Railways.

The agency is also constructing a 1.3-kilometre second line between Kibera and Satellite to serve the planned Talanta Stadium Train Station.

📌 What You Need to Know

Two new commuter stations are being constructed as part of the project, with facilities planned at Talanta Stadium and Laini Saba to improve access to the railway network.

Kenya Railways is also putting in place pedestrian overpasses and underpasses at Kibera, Laini Saba, Gatwekera and Kambi Muru to provide safer access to the railway.

The rail connection is expected to improve movement to major sporting venues while helping ease congestion on Nairobi roads when the city hosts large sporting and entertainment events.

The development comes as Kenya steps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations , which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania, with Talanta Stadium among the facilities being prepared for the tournament.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said in August that construction of Talanta Stadium had reached 94 per cent completion, with the main pitch ready and awaiting stitching while the two remaining training facilities stood at 50 per cent and 40 per cent completion.

Mvurya said the first matches at the stadium could be held in November or December, allowing the government to test the facility and address any challenges ahead of AFCON 2027.
