Machakos County is set for a major boost in digital learning following the unveiling of a unique Smart Library designed to combine traditional education with modern technology in one learning space.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Commissioned by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba at Mbukoni Comprehensive School, the state-backed facility integrates physical books with computers, high-speed internet, digital learning platforms and curriculum-aligned educational resources, giving learners access to a technology-enabled learning environment.
Unlike conventional school libraries that primarily house books, the Smart Library has been designed as an interactive learning hub where students and teachers can access both physical and digital educational materials.
The facility supports the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by providing technology that complements classroom learning.
📌 What You Need to Know
Among the library's defining features is its emphasis on inclusivity as it has been fitted with wheelchair-accessible ramps and barrier-free spaces to ensure learners, teachers and visitors living with disabilities can access all sections of the facility with ease.
As part of the initiative, more than 2,300 curriculum-aligned books have been donated to the school, significantly expanding the learning resources available to students across different grades.
Three classrooms at Mbukoni Comprehensive School have also been renovated and modernised to create learner-friendly spaces, while teachers have benefited from the construction of a new ablution block aimed at improving their working environment.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Ogamba said the Smart Library demonstrates how partnerships between government and private organisations can strengthen Kenya's education system by expanding access to technology.
"The Government remains committed to ensuring that every Kenyan learner has access to quality education supported by modern technology. This Library exemplifies the kind of collaboration that strengthens our education system by creating environments where learners can develop digital skills, critical thinking, and innovation. Together, we are preparing our young people for the opportunities and challenges of the twenty-first century," he said.
He noted that as education increasingly embraces digital tools, initiatives that provide learners with access to computers and online learning resources will play a key role in equipping them with the skills needed in today's technology-driven world.
