Kenya has formally established diplomatic relations with the Solomon Islands, opening a new bilateral relationship with the Pacific island nation.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced the development after signing a Joint Communiqué with Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Rick Nelson Houenipwela while attending the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) on Tuesday, September 22.

He explained that the new relationship is expected to provide a basis for cooperation in trade, the blue economy, climate action, as well as the exchange of skills and knowledge.

“This opens a new chapter for Kenya in the Pacific, creating a foundation to explore cooperation in trade, the blue economy, climate action, skills and knowledge exchange, while strengthening our collaboration on global issues that affect our people,” Mudavadi wrote in a statement.

He further explained that the partnership would create markets, networks and other opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs in Kenya.

According to Mudavadi, the move is part of efforts to expand the reach of the country's diplomacy around the world.

Kenya’s diplomatic engagement in Oceania has been anchored through its missions in Australia and New Zealand, with the High Commission in Canberra overseeing accredited relations across several Pacific Island states.

Thus, by formally adding a direct bilateral relationship, the agreement expands Kenya’s diplomatic footprint in the Pacific.

The development came alongside Mudavadi’s broader diplomatic discussion during UNGA 81 , including a meeting with Antigua and Barbuda Foreign Affairs Minister Chet Greene to discuss cooperation in trade, investment, the blue economy and climate action.

“For Kenya, stronger Caribbean partnerships can open new markets and connections for our businesses, entrepreneurs and young people while strengthening Africa’s voice on global issues that directly affect our future,” the Prime CS said.
