Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa now claims he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Mount Kenya University (MKU) and not Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), as alleged.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking on Thursday, September 17, Barasa said he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Kenya University, disputing claims that he obtained a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree from JKUAT.

“I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mt Kenya University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration from Murang’a University,” Barasa said during an interview with KTN News.

His remarks came a day after JKUAT stated that it had no record of him as a student and did not award him a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree.

📌 What You Need to Know

In a letter dated September 14, JKUAT Registrar of Academic Affairs Aggrey Wanyama told the Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) that Barasa's name did not appear in the university's records.

The university also said it did not hold a graduation ceremony in May 2008, the date indicated on the certificate attributed to Barasa.

“We have established that Didmus Barasa was not a student in JKUAT. His certificate for the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme is therefore not genuine,” Wanyama stated.

JKUAT further said the matter had previously been brought to the attention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Engineers Board of Kenya.

However, in his response, Barasa dismissed claims linking him to a JKUAT degree, alleging a well-orchestrated plot by a section of his political opponents to bring him down.

Barasa further defended his PhD certificate from Murang’a University, saying his research was driven by a problem he identified in Bungoma County, adding that a PhD was not merely the title of an academic programme.
