A rift has emerged in President William Ruto’s Cabinet after Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku differed over Mt Kenya’s voting dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Wahome on Thursday, July 8, 2026, rejected attempts to divide the Mt Kenya region along eastern and western lines, arguing that such politics undermines Ruto's efforts to unite the country.
In an apparent response to her Cabinet colleague, Wahome said Ruto has consistently championed national unity and warned against leaders promoting divisions within communities for political gain.
"If we now take a community and start resubdividing the community, we are not building in the direction the head of state has taken in this country of uniting the country irrespective of the region that opposed him," said Wahome.
📌 What You Need to Know
"The president has been at the forefront to rally Kenyans against ethnicity and vision along ethnic lines. Started by bringing Raila into the government, and I support the broad-based government."
She added that leaders in the Kenya Kwanza administration cannot preach national unity while at the same time encouraging divisions within communities, particularly Mt Kenya.
"For you to lead Kenyans, you need the unity of the nation; therefore, you cannot be for the unity of Kenyans and then start to preach division of a community. That is total ignorance, and I reject that trajectory," Wahome stated.
Her remarks came a day after CS Geoffrey R uku claimed Mt Kenya East does not need support from Mt Kenya West to secure President Ruto's re-election.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, July 8, Ruku argued that Mt Kenya East alone has enough votes to help deliver another term for the President.
According to the vocal CS, the region's estimated two million votes are sufficient without depending on support from the Kikuyu community in Mt Kenya West.
