The family of 44-year-old Gedion Makau has rejected the findings of a post-mortem examination conducted after he was found dead at Kilungu Police Station in Makueni County.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to pathologists, the examination conducted on Thursday, August 13, established that Makau died from asphyxiation caused by compression of the neck, contradicting the family’s concerns over the initial explanation that he had taken his own life in the cell.
Makau’s mother, Teressia Mbandi, questioned whether the injuries established during the post-mortem could determine who was responsible for applying pressure to his neck.
“I refuse the findings. When we found him at the station, his trousers were loosely placed around his neck. How do we know who strangled him? How do we know if it was him or if it was the officers who did it?” she said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The family has accused authorities of failing to provide a clear account of what happened inside the police station before Makau’s death.
His wife, Pauline Gideon, said relatives were also denied an opportunity to see the scene where officers claimed he had attempted to hang himself.
“His mother went and asked, 'Why don't you show us the place where you claim he hanged himself?' but they refused. Now, I have no faith in this government,” she said.
A cousin, Christopher Kathuku, said the family remained determined to establish the circumstances that led to Makau’s death while under police custody.
Makau had been arrested on Tuesday, August 11, at Nunguni Shopping Centre over allegations of possessing a machete and was taken to Kilungu Police Station.
His relatives were informed of his death the following day, with police telling them that he had allegedly used his trousers to strangle himself while in custody.
