Motorists using the Mai Mahiu Escarpment have been advised to expect possible traffic disruptions as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) undertakes pothole patching works along the busy road.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Drivers using the section have also been advised to slow down, exercise patience, follow traffic directions, and maintain lane discipline while the roadworks are ongoing.

The works are being carried out along the Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha section of the A8, a major highway linking Nairobi with Naivasha and other parts of the Rift Valley and western Kenya.

The road carries heavy traffic, including private vehicles, public service vehicles, and commercial trucks, making it an important transport corridor connecting Nairobi to the western part of the country.

📌 What You Need to Know

Traffic congestion is common along the route, particularly around the escarpment where the steep terrain and high volume of heavy trucks can slow down traffic.

Accidents along the escarpment have also previously caused major traffic disruptions, with crashes at high-risk sections sometimes blocking lanes and leaving motorists stuck in long queues.

The ongoing roadworks come as the government prepares to complete a major expansion of the Rironi-Naivasha section under the wider Rironi-Mau Summit highway project.

Transport Cabinet Secretary David Chirchir said on Wednesday, September 9 , that the Rironi-Naivasha section would be fully dualled by October 30, 2026, allowing motorists to use the upgraded road.

Chirchir said construction works were at an advanced stage and would be completed within the next one and a half months, promising smoother movement along the busy route.

“By October 30 this year, from Rironi to Naivasha, we will have completed the dualling, and people will be able to pass smoothly. There will be no more traffic on that route,” Chirchir said.
