The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two suspects accused of demanding money from a person whose matter is under investigation by the commission.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The suspects were arrested after allegedly claiming they had connections within EACC that could be used to influence the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

According to the commission, the two demanded Ksh100,000 from the person, promising to use their alleged networks to have the investigation terminated.

The suspects were arrested after allegedly receiving Ksh30,000 as part of the money they had demanded.

📌 What You Need to Know

EACC said the two are suspected to be part of a wider group of fraudsters operating in the Western region who either impersonate commission officials or falsely claim they can influence investigations.

The commission said the suspects were processed at its Western Regional Office before being booked at Bungoma Central Police Station.

Even so, investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion and whether other individuals were involved in the scheme.

The anti-graft body has cautioned members of the public against people claiming they can influence investigations or other official processes in exchange for money.

The latest arrests come after the commission has previously investigated similar cases involving people accused of impersonating its officers to obtain money from members of the public.

In August last year, EACC arrested seven people in the South Nyanza region following intelligence gathering and surveillance over an alleged scheme involving the impersonation of commission officials.
