The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has commenced the recruitment process for a substantive Director General months after appointing Joseph Oketch in an acting capacity.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The authority advertised the Director General position in a vacancy announcement on Tuesday, August 18, seeking a Kenyan with senior management experience and expertise relevant to the energy sector.
“The Authority is seeking to recruit suitably qualified, experienced, result-orientated, and highly motivated Kenyans to fill the following vacant position: Director General,” the notice read.
The move comes four months after former Director General Daniel Kiptoo resigned amid a controversy over the importation of fuel worth over Ksh4 billion, alleged to have been below required quality standards.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to EPRA’s notice, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in fields including engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, economics, environmental studies, or energy, and at least seven years of senior-level management experience is required.
In addition, candidates must also have a minimum of two years’ experience in petroleum and energy, professional qualifications, and membership of a relevant professional body in good standing.
The notice stated that the successful applicant will be responsible for providing strategic leadership while overseeing regulation across electricity, petroleum, oil operations, and renewable energy.
The role will also involve strengthening governance, internal controls, and regulatory oversight within the authority.
The announcement signals a formal move by EPRA to fill the top position substantively following the leadership changes triggered by the April fuel scandal, just days after the authority announced new fuel prices for the coming month .
Kiptoo left the office alongside former Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and former Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang in April.
