The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has warned Kenyans against buying Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from random dealers, urging consumers to inspect cylinders before purchasing or exchanging them carefully.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
EPRA advised consumers to check that an LPG cylinder has an intact seal, clear brand markings, and a serial number before accepting it.
According to the authority, consumers should remain vigilant and make sure they buy a product with an intact seal, clear brand markings, and a serial number.
Kenyans were also urged to confirm that the cylinder has a valid test or requalification date, noting that cylinders should be requalified within eight years of manufacture.
📌 What You Need to Know
"Check that the LPG cylinder has an intact seal, clear brand markings and serial number, and a valid test/requalification date - cylinders should be requalified within 8 years of manufacture," EPRA stated.
Consumers have been further advised to have LPG cylinders weighed to confirm that the correct tare and net weight is provided.
"Also, have the cylinder weighed to confirm the correct tare and net weight. Most importantly, purchase LPG only from an EPRA-licensed dealer," the authority added.
EPRA's warning comes amid reports of counterfeit cooking gas in Kenyan markets.
On Wednesday, August 26, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced that the government has begun a crackdown on dealers suspected of being involved in illegal LPG trade and those trading illicit cooking gas.
According to Wandayi, officers will pursue offenders vigorously, with enforcement teams working relentlessly to stamp out rogue operators across the sector, including cartels linked to powerful politicians.
