Greek multinational Amaco Energy Group is planning to invest Ksh194 billion ($1.5 billion) in an AI data centre in Mombasa that will generate its own electricity.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The company's Chief Executive Officer, Theodore Theodoropoulos, is in Kenya seeking government approval for the proposed facility.
The data centre will be built with an independent power-generation and cooling system, allowing it to operate without relying on Kenya's national electricity grid.
Amaco plans to use an offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered system known as Hercules to generate electricity for the facility, according to iAfrica .
📌 What You Need to Know
The company says the system could also produce surplus electricity that may be added to Kenya's wider power supply.
The proposal comes as Kenya faces growing demand for electricity from large digital infrastructure projects, including data centres supporting AI and cloud computing.
The proposed Microsoft-G42 data centre at Olkaria was initially announced as a Ksh129.4 billion ($1 billion) investment but has stalled partly over its huge power requirements.
The facility's electricity demand was later revised from 60MW to 1,000MW, equivalent to roughly a third of Kenya's total installed generation capacity.
The Amaco proposal comes as Kenya invests in expanding its electricity transmission network.
KETRACO has entered a Ksh40.4 billion ($312 million) partnership with Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation of India to develop new high-voltage transmission lines.
