Experts are warning of a sharp contrast in weather conditions across Kenya in the coming days, with parts of the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and Nyanza expected to experience a dry spell while rainfall increases along the Coast.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Weather forecasting expert Maithya Vilivu said a large mass of sinking air was suppressing rainfall over the Rift, Western Kenya and parts of Nyanza, with the dry conditions expected to persist in the coming days.

"It will take a change of seasons for things to get any better," Maithya said, pointing to the possibility of prolonged dry conditions in the affected areas.

The Coast and southern Somalia, however, are expected to experience enhanced rainfall from this weekend into next week as stronger south-easterly trade winds push moisture inland from the Indian Ocean.

📌 What You Need to Know

Maithya said some of this moisture could also reach the windward side of the Central Highlands and parts of Eastern Kenya next week, resulting in showers in the affected areas.

The short-term forecast comes as Kenya prepares for the October-December short rains, with the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority(KMSA) expecting above-average rainfall across much of the country.

According to the latest OND 2026 outlook released on August 26 , rainfall is expected to continue from September in parts of Western Kenya, including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii and other surrounding counties.

The rains are expected to arrive later in the Central Highlands, Nairobi, the Coast and parts of North-eastern Kenya, where the onset is forecast for the second to third weeks of October.

Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta are expected to receive the rains from the third to fourth weeks of October, while Turkana and Samburu are also expected to see an onset during the same period.

Kenya Met said the OND rains are expected to be fairly to well distributed across most parts of the country, although Turkana and Samburu could experience poor to fair distribution.
